Day 30: Project Quilting’s Starting Soon

Lost your quilting mojo? Sometimes smaller projects with tight deadlines are super helpful in getting it back.

Project Quilting (PQ) is a series of one-week challenges. Season seven starts on January 3rd. Check out the full calendar here.  Post your completed projects and win random drawings for prizes. Vote for your favorites and win viewer’s choice. One week to create, another to vote, then another challenge begins. There are six challenges per season.

I’ve participated before and am looking forward to getting back into the groove of sewing. Here’s what I’ve made in previous seasons.

Day 18: Safe, Warm & Loved

I’ve always had a vivid imagination. The magical worlds I experienced in my thoughts as a child were intricate and delightful.

Unfortunately, nightmares were just as detailed. There were many nights that I woke up screaming for my parents, who’d run in and comfort me. As I got older I wanted to try comforting myself. So I hatched a plan and repeated these words aloud, “I am safe, warm & loved.” I am safe. I’m not in danger right here right now. I am warm. I can feel the covers, pillow, and my body heat. I am loved. Thinking about the people who love me helps fear dissipate.

I made this quilt with Sam Hunter’s paper-pieced alphabet for the gallery in her book, Quilt Talk. It took me a little while to decide what I wanted to spell out. Then I remembered the childhood affirmation. What would you say if you could say anything?

Shop Small This Weekend

Hello everybody. If you’re in the USA I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. My husband and I got to host this year. We worked together to clean the house and cook turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, salad, carrots, corn, potato casserole, and pumpkin pies. His mom brought some homemade bread which rounded out our nice spread. Yum! Here’s a picture of my brother-in-law loading his plate.

Now that everybody’s onto eating pie for breakfast and looking up recipes for leftover turkey it’s time to turn our attention to holiday shopping. I’d like to encourage you to shop small businesses this year. I’ll be featuring some of my favorite small businesses today through Cyber Monday on the quiltartbymegan Facebook Page. “Like” and follow me over there to learn about great entrepreneurs and to shop their deals.

Of course, there are some great deals in my etsy shop too. Everything in there is now 30% off. You don’t need a coupon code as I’ve adjusted each price individually to reflect the sale. Easy peasy!

Little Things Sale

It’s often the little moments that mean the most. It’s the first bite into the watermelon I grew in the backyard, laughing at my feminist husband’s intentionally sexist comment, a sweet card from an uncle I haven’t seen in over a decade, waking up (yay, it’s not real,) from a nightmare. It’s catching up with good friends, a new crock-pot, baby pictures, and successful garage sales.

Here are a few of the smaller items in my etsy shop that are on sale for 25% off. The holidays will be here before you know it, it’s good to stock up on some of these early…. especially since this sale ends when August does. Gift Cards Collage Whoops. This should say gift card holders. Holidays Collage Christmas and Hanukkah so far. I’ll be adding more holidays’ items soon. Mug Rugs Collage Pretty and sweet. Good for cookies and milk, tea and biscuits, coffee and whatever you coffee drinkers eat with that stuff. 🙂 They’re stuffed with 100% cotton batting so they can also be used as hot pads and trivets.Pillows and Shams Collage

Custom pillows are also available.Scarves CollageThese scarves will keep you pretty and warm… and pretty warm.

I’ll have photos and prices of some of the quilts that are on sale in the next post. In the meantime, you can see them all in my Etsy shop.

Also, some of my quilts will be in shows in Simi Valley, California and De Moines, Iowa ! More details on that soon.

And The Walls Came a Tumbling Down

My husband and I have been looking forward to this for a long time: the day we take down two walls and turn the living room into a great room. He’s been hard at work running electrical, working in the attic, and doing all the other small tasks that have to happen before you can do the major tear-down.

Then, this weekend we did it! Those walls came down, one side at a time. There are spots in the photos because this sure did kick up a lot of dust. Okay, first photo. By this time Jeff had scraped the popcorn ceiling down and gotten most of the inside-the-bedroom insulation ripped off. We put the chunks of insulation straight into the rolling garbage bin and hit them with hammers to break them into smaller pieces. Most of the inside drywall fit into the trash that way. You can also see the plastic sheeting covering the doorway on the left in this photo. We did as much as we could with that up to keep the dust contained.

Jeff cut the drywall next to each wooden stud, and then cut the stud from the ceiling and floor. That way we had nice, long, pieces to remove. This was helpful in reducing the mess. Plus, we’d already filled the trash cans. These sections are in the backyard waiting for next week’s pickup. half drywall
Do you see the sections? One of the walls is gone. Now you can see the door to the garage, which we also installed.

Short Wall goneAnd from that door, you can see what used to be a long hallway and hall bathroom. The bathroom isn’t in the hall so much anymore. 🙂
No more hallway
Here’s the view from my desk. I’m blogging, facebooking, Pinteresting, and sewing from the living room great room. Both of those walls are down, modernizing this house and giving lots more living space. I’ll give you some shots of the whole large room later. Right now we still have all the furniture squished into what used to be all of our living room. We have some drywall patching to do, painting, flooring, etc still. But look at all this S P A C E! walls gone

Of course, it’s not officially a Great Room until the quilts are hung. 🙂

Secret Projects and One I Can Show

A secret’s worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept. – Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind

Most of the quilting and sewing projects I’m working on are secret. One’s crumby, another’s silly, and then there’s the waiting piece but I can’t talk about any of them just yet. And yes, they’re secret because they’re special and for people whom I care deeply about. When I can show you I will.

Still, I thought you guys might enjoy hearing from me so here’s a photo of a quilt that’s not a secret. It’s another crumbs quilt, a baby or lap sized, which is in the machine being quilted. It’s super-cute with the bubbles fabric and bordered in orange and red dots. It’ll be up for sale in my etsy shop once completed.

Expect a reveal on each of those secret projects this month!

A – door – able

My sweet friends and family have noticed that I haven’t blogged in a while, so here’s a small update on what I’ve been up to. Firstly, I’ve been spending most of my time in bed getting over some kind of bug (ick!) but exciting things are still happening at my house. Like…

DSCN0026

We have a new door! My ultra-handy husband installed this new door where there once was only wall. It goes from inside the garage to the side yard. As you can see there’s some stucco patching and other finishing touches that still need to be done, but we (he, with me handing him tools) got it done before the rains came.

DSCN0030Here’s the view from inside the garage. Woo! Oh, and there’s now a handle in it. Snapped the photo before that was installed.

I’ve been making little things for my etsy shop here and there as I can, too. Here’s the latest version of those card holders I like so much. They’re shiny! Here’s the listing if you want one (or three!)
green card holders (1) green card holders (2)

There are a couple more fabric choices in these already made. You can find cute robin card holders here and blue bubbles card holders here.

I do custom work! Would you like some card holders for a special occasion? Perhaps a holiday, birthday, or bridal shower? I can make these in nearly every cotton fabric combination you can imagine. Send me a message and let’s get started.

As my health improves I’ll be doing more and will get back to blogging more often.

That Crumb-y Pillow is Awesome!

I’m so blessed to have friends who will brainstorm craft ideas with me. This time it was the snowflake mini-group who helped me out. Soooooo… in addition to offering the super-cool letter pillows, state pillows are making an appearance in my etsy shop.

Founding snowflake, Trisha, ordered the first one so I could use it as a sample. She got a 16×16 inch square pillow cover. The crumb block is reverse-appliqued and in the shape of Wisconsin. Can you see the little heart? That’s over the city of her choice. I also hand-embroidered the word “Wisconsin” on it. Cool, huh?

Trisha's pillow cover

Here’s a close-up of that heart button. It’s sewn onto a yo-yo and is a little shiny so that it pops out and can be seen against those crumb fabrics.

Trisha didn’t need it, but I also sell the pillow forms. Order from me and it’ll save you a trip to the craft store.

You can have these be as simple or complex as you want. Just the state? Order that. The other options are add-ons for a few more dollars. What about getting a letter “J” pillow embroidered with Jaime’s name? I do custom orders! What’s your idea? Maybe a football with your team written on it, or a heart that says, “Will you marry me?”
